Jack is the bartender at the only club in Bend, Oregon, a college ski resort. Much of his time is spent renting out showers to young ladies and renting space at the peepholes to young men. Most of the girls know about the peepholes and don’t mind. Libby is a student at the university and needs a date (and a ride) for the big ski weekend. She meets Rick at the local ski shop and suddenly has a date! Libby and Rick are so turned on to each other that they pull the car off the road before they get to the ski lodge and really get to know each other! Meanwhile, Jack tires of peering through the peephole, and decides that it is time for some action. Catherine doesn’t object to his in-shower massage , but she doesn’t want anything else. Her friend Chrissie, however, wants everything else, so Jack is happy to oblige. Rick and Libby finally arrive at the Lodge and manage to get involved in the nude open air pool, where they meet (and make) many new friends. The next day, the ski slopes! And that night, the after ski activities, including a special performance by Norma.

Chuck Vincent – Blue Summer (1973)

The summer before going off to college, buddies Tracy (Darcy Hollingsworth) and Gene (Bo White) jump into their van “The Meat Wagon” and bum around in search of tail. They encounter sexy thieving hitchers, a lone biker, pimps, nymphos, and lonely housewives. Nearly every invitation to free love and a good time reveals people on the take or some other downside (the buddies usually manage to turn the tables) but it makes for a memorable summer (amounting to two days it seems) before the inevitable loss of freedom represented by adult life. Although rumored to have been released initially as a hardcore production, BLUE SUMMER as presented here does not feel like a hardcore sex movie lacking the explicit angles (although the lengthy scenes do look real); rather, it feels like a road movie/sex comedy with sex scenes that are more explicit than the norm for the genre. Produced by Allan Shackleton (who had a box office hit with SNUFF by adding fake snuff footage onto the end of another production and hiring people to protest its release), the acting is generally good with the leads having a good rapport and while more quirky than funny (despite comic situations) BLUE SUMMER moves at a quick clip. Seventies porn couple Eric Edwards and the late Chris Jordan appear in separate supporting roles.

Quote:
Blue Summer is entirely concerned with the adventures of two male friends spending the last weekend of summer before they go off to college in a van, bumming around and looking for action. This being 1972, the beat-up gray Dodge van is always referred to by the characters as a “bus,” and the extent of its customization is some hastily-drawn flowers and butterflies taped to its sides along with white block letters spelling out “THE MEAT WAGON” on its driver and passenger-side doors. Tracy (Darcey Hollingsworth), the van’s owner, is careful not to let his mother see the name with which he has christened his van before he leaves to pick up his best friend Gene (Bo White). The two friends set out for adventure and almost immediately run into a pair of female hitchhikers who are more than happy to trade some “action” for a ride in The Meat Wagon.
As the film progresses, Tracy and Gene find themselves in various sexual adventures between discussions of what they are going to after summer is over and they move on to college. Even the theme song of the film playing over the opening credits seems to indicate where the story is going: “Soon the leaves will be falling from the trees/ But for now the road is clear/ Would you pass another beer…” Gene seems eager to head off to college and settle into a family and career life like his (deeply unhappy, constantly bickering) parents, but Tracy feels stifled and trapped by the very idea. His father (never shown) is insisting that Tracy attend the same school he did, and since his father is paying the bills, he feels obligated to go. The situations Tracy and Gene find themselves in range from the goofy to the ominous, with occasional stabs at social satire. Their first adventure is with a pair of kleptomaniac hitchhikers who try to make off with half their supplies. When they meet a male hippie and two women, the hippie explains that he is more than happy to share “his” girls. After Tracy and Gene join the ladies in an impromptu foursome, the hippie demands they share alike and steals all their beer and moves into their tent. While driving, the boys pick up a “Preacher” who suggests that a small donation may go a ways toward saving their souls. They meet a biker who can’t start his motorcycle because it’s out of gas; once they put gas in the bike for him, the biker follows them for the rest of the film, his intentions unclear. In a small town, Tracy and Gene are tricked into buying a case of beer in exchange for sexual favors from a very dizzy blonde, but before they get their part of the trade a group of local toughs show up and threaten to beat them up.
Ironically, both friends eventually find themselves in sexual situations that underline the things they most fear: Tracy sleeps with a lonely, fretful married woman who has a son who looks to be about his age, while Gene meets an anonymous girl with whom he feels a deeper connection, but who is uninterested in any semblance of attachment. These unsettling encounters end up being the last sexual experiences for each of the boys in the film, which ends on an uncomfortable note as the two friends toast all the people they met over the weekend. Tracy offers a final toast, “To Freedom!” and holds his can of beer high. Gene seems not to hear him, the silence continues for a long while, and the words “END OF BLUE SUMMER” appear on the screen as they ride along in silence. Like the relentlessly pessimistic ending of Easy Rider, the looming spectre of adult responsibility that cast a pall over Blue Summer’s finale was blithely ignored by the films that came after it. This may at least be partially due to the fact that it was several years before the van movie genre came into being. Blue Summer, originally released with an “X” rating in 1972 was clearly way ahead of its time. By the time the rest of the van movies were released, no one called them “buses” any more.

Anthony Spinelli – It’s Called Murder, Baby (1983)

Quote:
I really love a good porn/genre mash-up. Titles like Sex Wish or Cafe Flesh immediately come to mind not only as good porn titles but good genre films in their own right. Add to that list Anthony Spinelli’s Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star which is as perfect a send-up of private eye/noir conventions as one could hope for this side of Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. It’s so good at being a genre film, that its toned down, R-rated cut – titled It’s Called Murder, Baby – may even be superior to its X version. Lucky for us, Vinegar Syndrome have given us both versions on DVD and newly restored at that.
Dixie Ray: Hollywood Star is a strange adult film, not only in how flat out handsome it is but in that it even stars the likes of Cameron Mitchell who apparently had no idea he was acting in a porn film. Mitchell is joined by adult film veterans like John Leslie, Lisa DeLeeuw and Veronica Hart who all ace their roles. This is pretty exposition heavy stuff – even more so in its R rated cut – for adult cinema, even if the sex does take up much of its 101 minute runtime. There is a legitimate narrative at stake, albeit a convoluted one that doesn’t always make sense, involving private detectives, police, a movie star, and a dead girl. I’m not going to attempt summary here, as it really deserves your attention, but it makes full use of its period, aesthetic and genre conventions. And then there’s the porn.
The X-rated version – which should be watched first – contains everything you’d hope for with this cast. With pretty much all bases covered and a good portion of the runtime devoted to getting sexy. It legitimately is, to its credit. As I mentioned before, this doesn’t just do the genre elements well, it does the porn well too. You should know what you’re getting into with John Leslie and Veronica Hart in the cast and they don’t disappoint. It never gets too kinky and if you’re hoping for some big Hollywood orgy scene, you’ll be disappointed. But, what’s here is good and there’s plenty of it to go around.
Now, you may think that the differences between the two cuts are the requisite edits to make the sex tamer for the MPAA. But, you’d be wrong. It’s Called Murder, Baby is practically a different film. The opening credits are different, the pacing is changed, there’s more dialogue and scenes are even extended. The runtime is a bit shorter (94 minutes here), but the result is a tighter and more engaging film. The sex scenes still exist, with different angles used, but they’re cut shorter and the moments before and after them are lengthened. If the story of Dixie Ray pulls you in, there’s a lot more of it in the R-rated cut. And Spinelli’s film is so damned good at what it does – outside of the porn – that, for my money, the R-rated cut is just the more rewarding of the two. If that’s not a testament to the talent of Spinelli and his cast, I don’t know what else would be. Great, great stuff here.
Vinegar Syndrome have done 2K restorations of both cuts – only available on DVD though – and they look really, really good. The X-rated cut looks marginally better, with a bit less damage and a healthier level of grain inherent in the source. The R-rated cut doesn’t look bad at all, but it is in noticeably worse shape than the former and isn’t quit as crisp at all times. Either way, both look damned good and it’s more impressive work from the VS folks. Audio is in the form of a mono track on both and it gets the job done. Only thing I noticed that was off was a bit of buzz/hiss in the R-rated cut, but it didn’t last long or take away from the experience.
This is another diamond in the rough release from Vinegar Syndrome that should appeal to a wider audience than one would expect. It’s Called Murder, Baby is a great title to target to people who wouldn’t usually watch porn. Regardless of who this reaches or how, it’s great to have it available and restored in this fashion. It’s another film to add to the great genre-porn cannon and I can’t wait to share it with everyone that I can.

Quote:
This release from Vinegar Syndrome is an “R” rated cut of Dixie Ray Hollywood Star that was retitled It’s Called Murder, Baby. This version was more my spead so I checked that cut out over the “X” version. The film follows a private dick who is hired on by Hollywood star Dixie Ray to find the man that is black mailing her. Someone snatched a photo of her not wearing panties and is now bribing her. She has lost work due to her age and is now having a hard time funding her lavish lifestyle. These bribes is hitting her wallet hard and she needs her dick to find out who it is. They first suspect her ex-husband who has been secretly sleeping with her daughter from another marriage but when he winds up dead he quickly puts the pieces together and learns that the killer and one behind the blackmailing is the one that hired him in the first place.**Spoiler Alert**
I was ready to hate this movie. I grew up on exploitation and blaxploitation films but I was never introduced to sexploitation flicks and vintage porns with plots until I was in college. Some, not many, were fun times while others just made no fucking sense and Swiss cheese the story all to hell. However, It’s Called Murder, Baby was very entertaining.
The acting in this one was surprisingly well done considering a majority of the cast were porn stars before hand. I’m not trying to disrespect or demoralize porn stars. They do a great job in their roles but the films they are accustomed to do not require a great deal of theatrics. They fuck for other’s enjoyments and I respect that. I know several porn stars and cam models and I mean no disrespect. With that being said, this cast shows a hell of a lot of talent when it comes to actually acting and not just the sex scenes. I was really impressed by John Leslie and Lisa De Leeuw. They both showed some amazing acting chops that can put most of today’s talents to shame. They both worked very well together and their scenes showed it. The story for this one is similar to dozen other murder mystery noirs. The film uses the murder mystery cliches of the classic noir films from the golden age of cinema and tosses all that in with some hardcore sex. The story flows well but the sex scene does break up the story somewhat and gets very distracting. That is the main reason I enjoyed the “R” rated version of the “X”. Finally those of you looking for blood will not find any here all. Instead, you will find some sleaze. Overall, It’s Called Murder, Baby is a pretty fun and raunchy murder mystery piece. It has some solid acting and the story is pretty enjoyable. If you want some sleazy action and mystery then be sure to check this one out!

Nagisa Ôshima – Ai no korîda AKA In the Realm of the Senses (1976)

Based upon a true incident in 1930s Japan, Nagisa Oshima’s controversial film effectively skirts the borderline between pornography and art — making Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris of four years earlier look like children’s programming in comparison. The story concerns servant and former prostitute Sada Abe (Eiko Matsuda) who becomes sexually obsessed with her employer Kizicho (Tatsuya Fuji), a businessman, after seeing him making love to his wife. After making love to Sada, Kizicho becomes obsessed with her as well. As their love-making becomes more and more intense, they find themselves unable to separate themselves from each other, until every waking hour is spent in more and more dangerous sexual acts with Sada becoming more and more of the aggressor. Finally, for the ultimate in eroticism, Kizicho agrees to be strangled during sexual ecstasy for the ultimate in orgasmic fulfillment.

Unknown – The Geek (1971)

“In the wilds of the Himalayan mountains, there are tales of a mammoth being known as the Abominable Snowman. In the similarly virgin territories of the North American continent, there exits its counterpart… Sasquash. otherwise known as THE GEEK.”
Yup. this is exactly what the world’s been waiting for: a hardcore saga about Sasquash sex! Yes. Sasquash. Supposedly “filmed on location in Oregon. Washington and Alberta. Canada” (but looking like it was shot in a single afternoon behind someone’s farm), six sex-crazed campers set out to find the hairy one.
Our first clue that this isn’t exactly a National Geographic special is when Valerie looks at John’s crotch and makes the first scientific discovery: “Oh. it’s so hard! I just wanna touch it.” John promptly pokes her in a field while she’s still wearing her shiny black go-go boots.
Then the team leader invites another of the gals into his tent for some “Italian sausage.” (He really says that.) After a sizzlin’ screwing, she asks. “Was I a good piece of ass?” “Best piece I ever had. Of course, you’re the only one.” he replies. “You mean to tell me you’re a virgin?!” “The closest I ever came was when my sister let me feel her breasts.” Ooookaaaay…
Fortunately. Sasquash finally shows up. waves his arms, and makes with a few half-hearted growls. (The poor bastard looks drunk.) Nevertheless, what do you think our dimwit campers do when they’re face to face with this legendary creature? That’s right… They send him one of their women: “Walk slowly and don’t scare him. okay?”
The chosen gal coyly approaches, holds a hand out for the creature to shake, and is immediately done doggie-style: “Oh that beast! He stuck that ugly thing into me!” The others are unnerved: “There he is. kids! Scram!”
Of course, the real geek on display here is the sorry asshole in the fright wig and Sasquash suit — a hilariously shaggy fur coat and corduroy pants ripped at the crotch with what looks like his tiny tadger dangling in the wind — who appears to be both tired and embarrassed and whose frantic humping of a second girl ends when he simply falls over on his side. Yes. boys and girls, that’s entertainment!

Quote:
This one follows a group of campers (three men – one of whom is Ric Lutze – and three women – one of whom is Lynn Holmes) that heads off into the woods – what woods? Who knows. The opening credits tell us this was ‘filmed on location in Oregon, Washington and Alberta, Canada.’ We then learn that there is the legend of a mammoth being, a grotesque being, lurking about these woods – this thing is known as The Geek. A narrator then tells us we’re about to learn about the sasquatch – part man, but mostly beast! Is the sasquatch a mutated version of ancient man? Are we really the masters of the Earth like we think we are? So many questions!
We spend the first eight minutes walking through the woods and then a clearing full of some stock footage deer before the uncredited director, who seems to really like his zoom lens, shows us the excitement of building a camp site! After that, one pair of hikers wanders off and has sex in the grass. The girl has a lot of pimples but the leather go-go boots are a nice touch (and practical for hiking). After that the leader of their group warns the rest that the area is uncharted before taking Holmes back to his tent for a drink that inevitably leads to sex. After that he tells her how his fifteen year old sister ran off and got married, which inspires her to take good care of him.
The next day they head back out into the wilderness unaware that they are being stalked by that which they hope to discover – The Geek! He’s played by a guy in a suit that looks like it was made out of carpet. His dong is hanging out of the crotch of this suit and he grunts and growls and then decides he wants to get it on with one of the girls. He rapes her while one of the guys watches and after he finishes the beast just sort of wanders away. The rest of the group is running around with a film camera trying to get some footage of The Geek. When the monster shows up and one of the girls falls down, he bones her too. Once he’s done, the guys fight him. It’s not a good fight though, he just sort of shoves them around a bit. It’s mostly over after that, everyone just sort of walks away.

Quote:
Hilariously awful film about six scientists (three women, three men) who go into the Oregon woods to try and locate Bigfoot. After walking, walking and walking some more, two of the couples end up having sex. The next day they head out into the wilderness (probably the director’s backyard) where they run into Bigfoot who wants some sex too.
THE GEEK is an outrageously horrible movie from start to finish. It was edited down to 14-minutes for a Something Weird Video extra but the complete version clocks in at 49 -minutes but even this one appears like it could be missing some footage (this restored VS version runs at 56 mins). This movie is just awful all around and there’s really nothing good to say about it besides the fact that it gets so awful that you can’t help but watch and once Bigfoot shows up things get so stupid that you can’t help but laugh.
As a porno the movie is quite awful because most of the “action” takes place off camera and it seems like the director really doesn’t know how to film the scenes. I know this here was before the “golden age” of porn but the sex here is just ugly, poorly filmed and certainly not erotic. The first ten-minutes of the film pretty much shows the six people walking but we get some pretty funny scenes like when the women go searching for firewood and find a pile of wood that was obviously just put there since it’s in the center of a field. Another hilarious moment happens after the second sex scene in the tent where the guy admits that he was a virgin. The girl asks if he ever came close and he says yes when his 15-year-old sister let him feel her breast. Then, the woman, asks if he could have gotten anything more out of her!!!! What on Earth were they thinking?
Once Bigfoot shows up he decides to get in on the action and rapes a couple of the woman and fights the men. The two rape scenes are both towards the softcore but I’m curious as to why the women just lay there and take it. There’s never an attempt for them to fight Bigfoot off. While they’re being attacked, the men are basically just watching without much thought. The Geek is without question one of the worst movies ever made but at the same time it’s so bad and so stupid that fans of bad cinema are going to want to watch it. Bigfoot didn’t use protection or pull out so it’s too bad we never got a Son Of The Geek.

Alex de Renzy – Powder Burns (1971)

This porno western hybrid tells the sordid tale of the McNasty Brothers, three outlaws who are quite popular with the inhabitants of Sewerpipe Creek because of their penchant for blowing all of their money at the local watering hole. This all goes to pot when Sheriff Sham kicks the three hoods out of town – he is the law, after all, so it’s his job to deal with such things. In a strange twist of fate, however, Sham is not only the sheriff but also the bartender so with the MacNasty Brothers gone, he too needs to figure out a way to get some cash rolling in. Enter a gal named Lolita, a foxy blonde dancer who impresses Sham with her striptease skills. He knows a good thing when he sees it and so he hires her to strut her stuff in his bar to get the guys rolling in and the money flowing once again. When this turns out to be a smart move he brings in more girls to peel for pay and he starts running some gambling tables too. Things are going quite well for him until the McNasty Brothers return to Sewerpipe Creek, but Sham has a plan and doesn’t intend to let his business go down the tubes again… This one is pretty incomprehensible. It’s essentially a western about a Sheriff who winds up running a whorehouse but it’s all over the place in terms of plot, pacing and style. Even when the Sheriff narrates things in an attempt to bring all of this together it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It’s a fairly experimental film and it definitely gets points for taking strange chances in terms of setting, casting and… pretty much everything else but it’s loopy as loopy can be.

Quote:
After a montage of the vastness of the desert (we’re nearly in Herzogian territory here!) we are thrown balls deep in to a small shoot out. Yep, welcome to the Old West! Well, not exactly! Aside from cowboys, horses and fitting music, we also have chaps wearing aviator shades and scrapped cars laying about. The year is actually 1969 and we’re in the small town of Sewer Pipe Creek. The local sheriff (and barkeep) is having a spot of trouble with the pesky McNasty Brothers, a trio of brothers who like to cause chaos in the town for a couple of weeks once a year. Our hero runs the scum out of town and as a result, his saloon girls aren’t too happy because although a troublesome threesome, they spend more money in the town in two weeks they are gallivanting than the locals do in a whole month. Cut to a year a later and we see the now former sheriff pondering on his career and life as he knows it. After trying to unsuccessfully woo his only remaining saloon girl, a new face appears in town. A young and curvy blonde go-go dancer nicknamed “The Golden Dream”. She struts her stuff (and what a lovely pair they are!) for the barkeep and his pals. She is an instant hit, sparking the barkeep to dream of the business opportunities his new dancer can bring to town. As he’s drooling over his new busty business venture, the McNasty Brothers are padding out the run time by slowly (I mean VERY slowly) roaming the desert and causing yet more mischief. They eventually return to Sewer Pipe Creek. Will history repeat itself? Well, after some innocent enough drinking and frolicking with the new dancers (that was quick barkeep!), a fight breaks out between the brothers and a couple of locals, resulting in another shootout in which all those involved are killed (even though you can clearly see them still breathing) leaving the girls to rob the corpses! Yep, your guess is as good as mine?
What can I say about Powder Burns? Not that much actually. What we have here is an ultimately unforgettable film. A clumsily staged and acted outing that has more unintentional entertainment that intentional. Don’t get me wrong, the comedy element works with some genuinely funny dialogue from our sheriff / barkeep. There’s some nice talent on show too. Unfortunately, none of the girls are really credited, which is a shame because even though the film lacks in terms of story (an almost porn take on Samuel Fuller’s Forty Guns), acting and visually appealing technical elements (with the exception of the occasionally interesting use of handheld cinematography), the girls are very nice indeed and I want to see more! There are some rather odd elements too, including an extended and sped up sequence of people drinking at the bar. I have no idea why that’s included, but it is and I suppose it adds to the charm of the film. It’s inoffensive enough, but I could see some people having major problems with some of the out of place and odd sequences. If you’re here for the porn element, you may also be disappointed as the small amount of actual sex is clumped together within the final third. Yep, this is an unconventional (just like a deRenzy film should be) piece of early porno to say the least.

Alan Vydra – Abflug Bermudas (1976)

Labeled as an erotic thriller this is the third full feature by Alan Vydra.
Besides being producer, and director Vydra also edited the movie and did camera.

Poor Mario an orphan who had served in the foreign legion works for a night club owner and gangster boss who has a human trafficking operation running. Mario is in love with Cora the girlfriend of the boss. Our hero plans to take the girl and leave the city of Hamburg straight to the Bermudas. Trouble ahead?

In comparison to Vydra’s other early movies Abflug Bermuda has no intended humor at all. It features some rough(ie) scenes and in genereal a very dark tone. The American singer Angie Stardust is performing “Summertime” at the famous travesty cabaret club Pulverfass in on scene. Also a stand up performance by a unknown drag queen is included. This had never been released on dvd like all the early Alan Vydra movies. Such a shame. The dialouges are ace like always in Beate Uhse productions.

Jesus Franco – Revenge of the Alligator Ladies [Original Cut] (2013)

FILM SYNOPSIS/BRIEF REVIEW:

Jess Franco plays himself in this sly comedy in which he is engaged in directing another erotic film while the subject of his previous film, private detective Al Pereira, attempts to relate to the eccentric film making process of Jess Franco. Pereira also has difficult relationships with his son and women in general, illustrated in various amusing vignettes. He travels to Germany where he becomes accidentally involved in a sort of international espionage affair due to his presence at a Communist gathering.

Back in Spain director Franco continues to film his alligator ladies, Carmen Montes, Irene Verdu and Paula Davis, in extended erotic interludes. Much of the Franco-directed footage is shot through mirrors showing both the erotic action and Franco directing it. These self reflexive images are a carry-over from Franco’s previous Al Pereira adventure, AL PEREIRA VS THE ALLIGATOR LADIES and his 1980 surrealist science fiction parody, EL SEXO ESTA LOCO. The scenes involving Pereria and his family, friends and associates, along with the scenes filmed in Germany were directed by longtime Franco actor-associate Antonio Mayans after Franco’s death in April, 2013. Pereira is gamely played by Mayans as a long-suffering victim of everyone’s ridicule, especially the director and the alligator ladies, who have the last word. The irreverent tone and sharp edged dialogue sometimes evoke the droll repartee of the W.S. Van Dyke’s 1934 mystery-comedy THE THIN MAN.

This is the last in a long running series of Jess Franco directed films about troubled investigator Al Pereira, the first being ATTACK OF THE ROBOTS/CARTAS BOCA ARRIBA (1966), in which Pereira was played by American singer-actor Eddie Constantine. A shorter, incomplete version of REVENGE OF THE ALLIGATOR LADIES, directed by Franco himself, is more focused on the director shooting erotic scenes with Montes and co.. Other recommended Franco Al Pereira titles include LES EBRANLEES (1972), with Howard Vernon in the role, DOWNTOWN (1975), which features Franco himself as the detective, BOTAS NEGRAS, LATIGO DE CUERO (1982) and CAMINO SOLITARIO (1983), in which Mayans finally took over the role.

REVENGE OF THE ALLIGATOR LADIES will be of interest to Jess Franco enthusiasts, cult film historians and collectors as the ultimate illustration of Jess Franco’s obsession with the process of personal creation while continuing to throw himself into his work right up until his passing.

Wakefield Poole – Bible! (1974)

From acclaimed erotic filmmaker, Wakefield Poole, comes The Bible, like you’ve never seen it before!
The stories of Adam & Eve, Bath Sheba and Samson & Delilah are given sexual twists in this visually stunning and sensually charged masterpiece of the erotic avant-garde.
Featuring Georgina Spelvin (The Devil in Miss Jones), Gloria Grant and Bo White. Wakefield Poole’s Bible! may have been a commercial and artistic failure, but the film is entertaining on so many levels that we can highly recommend it because it offers some fascinating insights into one of the strangest film projects of its era.

Quote:
Not many of us will use the name Wakefield Poole and the Bible in the same breath. Poole has had several careers—a dance, a choreographer and a hardcore gay porno film maker. Many were surprised to hear that he was planning to make a film out of the Bible. The film features Georgina Spelvin, Gloria Grant and Bo White and it is finally available on video for all to see. Poole took several Bible stories: Adam and Eve, David and Bathsheba, Samson and Delilah and added a bit of sex and lots of nudity and while the basic idea of the stories are there, we see what we have never seen before much less thought of. Georgina Spelvin didn’t only do hardcore and there is actually very little here to offend anyone; the nudity is quite matter-of-fact and the interpretation of tales from the Bible should scarcely bring charges of heresy. There’s also precious little to pleasure the raincoat crowd, but it should have been a huge success with the surreal art-house audience. There is essentially no dialogue as it’s a tribute to silent features, actors, and directors. The soundtrack consists almost entirely of classical music with no voice-over narration. The presence and occasional absence of music provides dramatic emphasis to the film. I can say that the photography is stunning, that the characters exude a sense of beauty and that this is certainly not the Bible that I have read. But then neither is this a novelty. This film is quite a surprise and is certainly a one-of-a-kind production. We live in a world where freedom of expression is a basic right and I admire Wakefield Poole’s vision while I am just not sure that this film ever had to be made. Some will think it is pornographic even though we see no sex and others will acclaim it as the birth of a vision. I urge you to see it and come to your own conclusions.

Quote:
The name Wakefield Poole may not mean much to mainstream audiences but in the 1970s he was quite a controversial filmmaker. Poole initially trained for the ballet then drifted into movie making. In 1971, Poole released Boys in the Sand, the first “up market” hardcore gay movie. It caused quite a sensation and was immediately embraced by long-suffering gay males who heretofore had to be content with low-end, quickly shot pornographic “loops” that played in Times Square grindhouses. Poole’s film was taken seriously by the critical establishment and actually earned praise in reputable publications like Variety. The film actually cracked Variety’s list of the top 50 grossing films in America, an amazing achievement for a movie with limited appeal and distribution. It also made a gay movie icon of actor Casey Donovan. Poole and Donovan followed this project up with another hardcore porn flick, Bijou, which was released in 1972. Inspired by the fact that his filmmaking techniques were being praised, Poole became more ambitious and managed to cobble together a then sizable budget for his next film, Wakefield Poole’s Bible! (yes, the exclamation point was part of the title.) Poole attempted to take three tales from the Bible and bring them to the screen using his own spin on the narratives. We see Adam and Eve, David and Bathsheba and Samson and Delilah in period settings but through Poole’s unique perspective. Poole opted to give his actors no dialogue. The film is played silently to the accompaniment of classical music. The result is one of the most bizarre experimental films of its era. Although Poole claims he had a budget of $150,000 other sources state it was actually less than half that. Regardless, it was a significant sum compared to the budgets of his previous ventures. Poole managed to do a lot with very little. Using creative locations and camerawork, he sometimes succeeds in conveying an interesting look for his trilogy of Biblical tales. Most impressive are the film’s opening scenes in which we first see Adam. Shot amid some rather stunning rock formations on a beach, Poole soon introduces us to Adam’s first encounter with Eve. Understandably, it doesn’t take the only man and woman on earth to get down to doing what men and women like to do. The sequence is more romantic than erotic and this sets the tone for the rest of the film. The David and Bathsheba segment stars Georgina Spelvin, then riding the wave of worldwide publicity for her success in the notorious Devil in Miss Jones, considered by many to be the most accomplished porn movie ever made. Although Poole has Spelvin cavorting around fully naked, he presents the Biblical tale as a slapstick comedy with a sexually frustrated wife unable to interest her husband, a macho army general, in anything relating to love making. The third tale is the most effective with actress Gloria Grant (who went on to a legitimate career, winning an Emmy in the process) as a visually striking Delilah who seduces Samson as part of a plot to punish him for the murder of an innocent person.
The Vinegar Syndrome video label has released Wakefield Poole’s Bible! as a special DVD edition, restored and presented in its uncut format. While Poole can be commended for trying to achieve something outside the porn film industry, the movie was too bizarre to appeal to mainstream audiences. Paradoxically, it also alienated Poole’s core following of gay men by presenting tales of heterosexual sex, albeit in a softcore format. Not helping matters was the fact that the movie was slapped with an X rating, which even at the time seemed unnecessarily harsh. Poole theorized that it would have been given an “R” rating had the movie been made by anyone else, but his name and that of Spelvin virtually ensured retribution from the ratings board. By his own admission, the film was a flop and was only seen by a relative handful of people in its initial release. The movie has some striking visual elements, some of them effective and creative and others bordering on the pretentious. It’s hard to imagine that Poole ever envisioned this pet project being embraced by movie goers on a wide basis. Wakefield Poole’s Bible! may have been a commercial and artistic failure but the DVD is entertaining on so many levels that we can highly recommend it because it offers some fascinating insights into one of the strangest film projects of its era.

Quote:
Japanese pink movie territory can be a fairly murky and frightening place. In the early 1970s Japanese sex films accounted for 50% of the countries cinematic output and the classic pink films really show the dark underbelly of Japanese patriarchal culture at its most alarming. Some of these films are almost unwatchable. Although they don’t feature actual sex they have what some have termed a “polymorphous perversity”, suggesting human emotions and desires that are far more shocking than a simple penetration shot.

Tatsumi Kumashiro is my favourite of the pink film directors and I would rank him well above Koji Wakamatsu as a true visionary of “guttural desires”. His late 1970s film THE WOMAN WITH RED HAIR (which I’ll upload once I discover how to separate subtitles from image) was voted 3rd best Japanese film of the year by the respected ‘Cinema Jumpo’ magazine. The director’s take on life, sex and filmmaking is forebodingly dark but hints at essential, if hard to stomach, human motivations and desires. Of the Kumashiro films that I’ve seen to date WOODS ARE WET ranks as easily the most unforgettable and certainly the most shocking.

Running at just over an hour the film begins with a generic premise (a young girl, on the run from the police, takes refuge in a hotel run by a seemingly friendly woman and her peculiar husband) before descending into a nightmarish world of perversion and abuse, psychedelic in its intensity. An outrageous twenty minute section in the middle of the film must represent the most Sadean vision ever committed to film. The politics of the film represent the essential struggle of living in a highly organized society (whether to conform or rebel) but dilute this struggle to its absolute purity of essence.

Woods Are Wet is a beautiful film, a troubling film, a shocking film. As a cinematic experience it’s absolutely unforgettable and largely one of a kind. I can only hope that one day a proper version of the film will be released so that it can be appreciated in its full glory.

When a successful, but tired Tokyo-based playwright who has sworn off easy women and casual encounters takes refuge in the countryside, his plans are disrupted by a horny woman who pedals fast into his life and is unrelenting.

About the project:
Five of Japan’s top directors — Sion Sono and Hideo Nakata among them — will make short features in the classic “Nikkatsu Roman Porno” format for theatrical release and TV broadcast, Nikkatsu has revealed.

Other directors for the “Roman Porno Reboot Project” are Akihiko Shiota, Kazuya Shiraishi and Isao Yukisada.

All will be given the same budget and be required to shoot their films within one week, with running times of 70 to 80 minutes. Exact titles and release schedules have yet to be decided.

The new series marks the 45 years since the 1971 start of “Nikkatsu Roman Porno,” when the venerable Nikkatsu studio was facing bankruptcy and decided to shift production to feature-length softcore porn. It made the films using studio resources and young studio-trained directors.

The studio cranked out nearly 1,100 titles before ending production of the genre in 1988 under pressure from the flood of straight-to-video adult films.

A long-dormant sub-genre of cinema returns to sparky life in Akihiko Shiota’s increasingly raunchy but disarmingly breezy Wet Woman in the Wind(Kaze ni nureta onna). Part of a five-film project reviving the ‘Roman Porno’ movies which helped sustain venerable production-house Nikkatsu through the 1970s and 1980s, it’s an extreme long-shot in Locarno’s Golden Leopard competition but should nevertheless enjoy further festival exposure in coming months. Already sold to South Korea and Taiwan, it has the makings of a novelty box-office attraction at home in Japan where the Roman Porno period is now regarded with nostalgic affection.

Among the five directors selected for Nikkatsu’s intriguing gambit, Shiota lacks the international renown of Hideo Nakata (Ring) or the critical reputation of Sion Sono (Love Exposure), and is still best-known at home for directing the futuristically swashbuckling, 139-minute mega-hit Dororo(2007). His belated follow-up, 2014’s two-hour medical weepy I Just Wanna Hug You, was much more tepidly received, and he now returns to the relatively brief running-times of his previous independent successes, the S+M themed debut Moonlight Whispers (1999) and high-school drama Harmful Insect (2001).

Indeed, Nikkatsu’s stipulations, intended to mimic the original Roman Porno template (‘Roman’ here comes from the French word for a novel), required a duration of less than 80 minutes and a tight one-week shooting schedule. Shiota rises to these restrictions with flair and energy, concocting a silly but engaging tale about Kosuke (Tasuku Nagaoka), a successful, thirtysomething Tokyo playwright who, burned out by romantic shenanigans, swears off women and becomes a rural recluse. His attempts at off-grid living are complicated by livewire lass Shiori (Yuki Mamiya), who quite literally cycles into his life out of the blue — propelling herself into a river in one of the opening scenes.

“I’ve locked onto you,” she exclaims to the bemused Kosuke, “don’t think you can escape me! You can’t!” Kosuke’s attempts to brush Shiori off like a “stray dog” meet with little success, and she installs herself as a waitress at a nearby diner. Further daft complications arise when Kosuke’s Tokyo-theaterworld past catches up with him in the form of an admiring troupe of performers, setting in chain the vigorous sexual escapades which take up the bulk of Wet Woman In the Wind‘s second half.

These include a slapstick threesome that takes a steamily sapphic turn, and a comically protracted example of rock-the-house coitus whose destructive impact trumps even that famously over-the-top sequence involving Jeff Goldbum and Emma Thompson in The Tall Guy (1989). Belly-laughs are duly reaped courtesy of the game ensemble, who throw themselves into proceedings with suitable brio — egged on by Shunsuke Kida’s infectious, percussively jaunty-jazzy score — while Shiota’s screenplay is good for intermittent belly-laughs before dribbling away somewhat post-climax.

His script nods to his own back-catalogue, to Howard Hawks’ screwball classic Bringing Up Baby and to several Roman Porno classics along the way. “I’m a love hunter,” explains Shiori, name-checking Seiichiro Yamaguchi’s wildly controversial 1972 entry which saw cops raiding cinemas and arresting the director and several key personnel at the studio. Times have moved on in the intervening decades, of course, and the titillating semi-soft-core of Wet Woman in the Wind isn’t likely to land anyone in anything remotely hot water — though the upcoming installment by perpetual provocateur Sono may yet elevate pulses both inside cinemas and further afield.

Quote:
Nikkatsu has rebooted the Roman porno label and recommenced production of new works reviving its function as a sandbox for playful experimentation with the aim of attaing new forms of cinematic expression. Hideo Nakata entered Nikkatsu as an assistant director and experienced several on-location shoots for Roman porno soft-core series, but this film is the first Roman porno title directed by Nakata himself. He challenges a lesbian world taking over from the old title spirits, with his respect for his master, director Masaru konuma.

One passionate story — a young woman bets her life on an exceptional love beyond the gender. Tokiko, a ceramic artist, and her apprentice Haruka. Two females are in a relationship. The couple is not an intrinsic lesbian, but they fell for each other by chance.

Nice cast in this almost-legit sex knock-off of HEAVAN CAN WAIT which itself stole its plot from one old movie and its title from another old movie. To make up the difference, the Afterworld sends him back to Earth, and into the body of his just-deceased boss. Unfortunately, the boss was murdered by his wife and her lover … who are now more determined than ever to make sure he stays dead this time!” Starring Sharon Kane, Kelly Nichols, Joanna Storm, Michael Knight, Gayle Sterling, Ron Jeremy, Veronica Hart.
