After performing in Swan Lake, virginal ballerina Miki (Yukari Taguchi) is approached by Akiko (Erina Mirai), elegant older sister of her boyfriend Genichiro who has been missing for a year. Hoping to uncover his whereabouts, Miki accepts an invitation to Akiko’s ballet school at a secluded castle hideaway. As they share a cup of tea, Miki is horrified to discover she has been drugged and stumbles into the studio to find the young, naked ballet students engaged in a heated lesbian orgy on the floor. Bound captive, seduced, violated and abused in every imaginable way by Akiko and her satanic manservant, Miki’s ordeal continues day after day. All the while she remains unaware, the recently-crippled Genichiro is bedridden upstairs. It is all part of Akiko’s evil plan to turn sweet, innocent Miki into a wanton nymphomaniac so she will be disgraced in Genchiro’s eyes. Then Akiko can make him her incestuous love toy.
A box office crisis in the early Seventies drove Japan’s oldest film studio, Nikkatsu Films, to concentrate solely on cranking out so-called Roman Porno or romantic porno movies. These were not tawdry low-budget affairs for the raincoat crowd but glossy, impeccably crafted albeit lurid sex fantasies pitched at mainstream audiences. Some of these were searing, even award-winning dramas, others were bawdy comical romps, and some were twisted tales of psychosexual horror. Many important Japanese filmmakers launched their careers in roman porno, including Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Shusuke Kaneko. Sex Hunter marked the directorial debut of Toshiharu Ikeda who went on to one of the leading lights in Japanese horror and action films. Known for his audacious camerawork and inventive lighting tricks, Ikeda found cult fame with the likes of Evil Dead Trap (1988), Mermaid Legend (1984), Red Foliage (1992) and XX: Beautiful Prey (1996) to name but a few, though detractors charge he cribbed his style from Dario Argento.
There are aspects of Argento lingering about Sex Hunter’s operatic tone, stylized sets and dreamily abstract visual flourishes but the film arguably draws as much from the ballet manga serialised in girls’ magazines that were popular around the time. It is almost a parody of their emotional excesses only in a pornographic context. There is an aggressively sadomasochistic edge to Japanese sexploitation that leaves it unpalatable to some though irresistable to others. In fact, Sex Hunter draws explicitly upon the ideas of the Marquis De Sade as outlined in his key text, “Philosophy of the Boudoir” wherein a virginal innocent is similarly kidnapped and repeatedly abused for days on end, eventually emerging with an altered world view.
Ikeda treads a fine line between harmless steamy nonsense and brutal degradation, especially as Miki appears to respond passionately to her rapists. By far the nastiest scene involves the hapless heroine being violated with a Coca-Cola bottle then strung up in mid-air until a fountain of the fizzy beverage comes spurting out her ass. Worst product placement ever. Obviously this might as well have “not for everyone” stamped across it in big black letters, yet beneath the sordid surface lurks an oddly ingratiating fairytale quality. Akiko is evidently out to ensure Miki is not only spurned by Genichiro but rejected by a society that hypocritically prizes virginal innocence above worldliness in women. The manner in which her devious plan backfires is rather delicious as Miki begins to derive power from her situation, in an echo of Sadean heroines from Eugenie to Justine.
Taut, economical at a mere sixty-seven minutes, Sex Hunter is extremely well photographed and acted particularly by the alluring Yukari Taguchi. Admittedly depraved yet undeniably erotic in parts provided one is willing to delve beneath the sadism to discern the satirical intent. But you won’t feel like having a Coke afterwards.

Nicole Segaud seems to be the girlfriend of another and Valerie Martin plays Carole, the assistant to the two young photographers. Some of the models don’t get involved much in the action, except perhaps in the final orgy scene where most of the participants wear masks at first. Here other, previously unseen, males and females appear. The basement room with the pinball machine also features in a scene between Jane Baker and Guy Royer.
This is one of those films with so many gorgeous porn starlets that it feels like what porn critic Imperator calls a “waste of resources”. There is no single lead actress, but Jane Baker is the one who really shines. She is at her sexiest and fiestiest. Guy Royer can’t seem to get enough of her. Julia is equally lovely, but not at her best and she wears too much makeup. Sophie is looking especially hot and this is only the second time I can recall seeing her do anal. Watch closely when she walks across the room with Cyril Val and notice how much taller than him she is. Dominique Saint Clair’s scene with Cyril Val is both funny and sexy and it’s typical of director Kikoine’s twisted sense of humor.

Here’s a terrific updating of the 1956 Nikkatsu classic Crazed Fruit; a new version that is superior to the original. While the original was a seminal sun tribe classic, the new version examines the 1980s Japanese youth from a more intimate, less political perspective. Consequently, it’s a remake in name only. The film focuses on the unstable relationship between two youngsters: a guy working in a sex club and a rich girl who trades her stepfather lover for a younger boyfriend just for a change. Neither one of them really understand each other – or themselves. Like many of director Kichitaro Negishi’s other films, this movie would also be more at home in Art Theatre Guild’s catalogue than in the Roman Porno series where it was released (Negishi’s next film, Distant Thunder, was, in fact, an ATG production). The film features all of Negishi’s strengths: energetic visual approach, terrific use of pop music, freezy outdoor scenes, and quiet moments which challenge the viewer to analyze the complex characters. The last 5 minutes features some of the most stylish cinema even seen in the Roman Porno genre. Acting is thoroughly great as well. Lead actor Yûji Honma comes from Art Theatre Guild and the female star Yuki Ninagawa likewise has mainstream background. Neither one of them ever appeared in another Roman Porno production. Supporting actors are just as good: Eiji Okada (Hiroshima mon amour), talented Roman Porno regular Nobutaka Masutomi, and Eiko Nagashima whose performance as child-like, miserable yet energetic hooker is strangely toughing and one of the film’s highlights. – HungFist @ BnB

She doesn’t like it one bit, but in order to keep things quiet and save her marriage, poor Evelyn must submit to the sexual whims of her cruel blackmailer.
The intrigues get beefier and more sensational as scheming and back-stabbing goes on, and soon a mysterious bald Yul-Brynner-wannabe with an interesting connection to the stolen money makes the scene in an ambulance. His name is Marco, he’s pissed, he’s got a seriously kinky girlfriend, and he drops some savage n’ heady dialogue (“Have you ever hated anyone with a hate that’s almost love? You can feed yourself with it for months!”) before taking his part in an overtly violent action-packed chase-scene finale….
Released by BOB CRESSE through Olympic International Films, this is a particularly entertaining example of the 1960s French art-house / sexploitation-film hybrid. The acting is excellent, the setting is sumptuous, the girls are knockouts, and veteran French director MAX PECAS — who was a high-quality trail blazer in every stage of the development of erotic European film (from early 1960s sexy art-house erotica to fleshier 1970s soft-X fare) — kicks it out Roger-Vadim style, only with a pulse. Pecas is perhaps best know for 1975’s Felicia.
Written by JEAN PATRICK MANCHETTE, one of the most critically acclaimed crime novelists in France during the 1970s, The Slave shares a nearly identical cast as Torment, another Pecas/Manchette offering from 1966.

I saw this film on late-night British TV (where it was retitled ‘The Virgin Courtesan’) and can honestly say I haven’t laughed so much in years! It plays like a raucous soft-porn parody of ‘My Fair Lady’ or ‘Born Yesterday.’ A wide-eyed innocent ventures into a corrupt, alien world – and reduces it to a shambles with her own brand of goofy integrity. Any plot summary makes it sound gross, gratuitous and offensive. How can we laugh at a film where a ‘mentally challenged’ girl gets sold into prostitution? Especially one that includes a long and drawn-out ‘comic’ rape scene akin to Almodovar’s ‘Kika’?
Incredibly enough, laugh we can and laugh we do. The humour is raunchy and outrageous – and often very black. Yet director Chusei Sone has an elegance and lightness of touch that ensures it’s never vulgar and (more important, perhaps) never cruel. Not even a closing act of necrophilia can shatter the film’s overall good spirits, or our liking for its ‘dumb but honest’ heroine – whose naivete about sex and her own body makes her an unlikely feminist figure in patriarchal 19th century Japan. This film is a gem!

So you’ve watched all the sleazy, violent, misogynistic, rape-oriented pinku material you can handle and ya want something different, right? Well, personally, I can’t get enough of the sleazy pinku stuff – but SECRET CHRONICLE: PROSTITUTION MARKET is a fun departure for fans of the genre looking for something a little different and perhaps “lighter”. I wasn’t sure how a Nikkatsu comedy would work out – but honestly, this film is pretty damn funny – if also totally Un-PC in it’s subject matter.
Apparently, the whore business was really booming in Japan back in the day – so much so that “whorebrokers” used to go from village to village searching out the best cooch to bring back to the local towns to stock the brothels with. One famous whorebroker finds a semi-retarded young lady that has all the right “equipment” (something about earthworms and eels that I assumed was some sort of innuendo for her puss…) and buys her on the cheap. Unfortunately, this simple young lady has no idea what whorin’ is all about, so once thrown into the job, she has no idea what to do – leading to some truly hilarious scenes involving a sumo wrestler, a scar-faced pretty-boy, and a bull, to name a few. When none of her “tricks” turn out right, the madam gets fed up and sad and dejected, the girl runs away. She runs back into her original whorebroker, who she’s grown to have some affection for, and he returns her to the brothel and shows the madam himself that she’s a keeper…
There’s too much that goes on in SECRET CHRONICLE: PROSTITUTION MARKET for me to accurately do it justice – suffice to say that it’s a funny film that will be of special interest to hardcore pinku fans. There’s still plenty of nudity and whatnot on display so you won’t feel gypped in that department, and the lead actress (whose performance as a simpleton is both “genuine” and endearing) is pretty damn sexy too. The ending changes tone quite a bit and is actually quite sad – but it involves a scene of necrophilia, so that’s just another plus in my book. A fun film that is definitely worth checking out…8.5/10
